Don’t panic, but call us right away. If it’s outside our normal business hours, call the Animal Emergency Clinic at (864) 877-7387. If your pet is not showing any adverse symptoms, you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. You may be charged a consultation fee.
If your pet ingested medication try to figure out how many tablets, if he or she ingested poison like fertilizer or insecticide then make sure to bring in package with you as we will need this information. The Animal Poison Control is a great resource to help us with knowing if your pet ingested a toxic dose of a substance and to know if there are diagnostics and/or treatments that are specific to the material ingested. They will also assign your pet a case number so that we can call back later for additional information or if you pet will require over night or over weekend observation we can continue to consult with a toxicologist with no additional fee.
Even if your pet seems fine, it is important to call us and let us know what occurred so we can alert you if there could be problems later on. Example: 1 stick of sugar-free gum can kill a pet and can cause seizure producing low blood sugar or onset of organ failure 24-48 hours after ingestion.
